There are 600,000+ counselors in America, by some estimates, and the vast majority of them are not at all formed by the Church or Christianity. Our society has lost its traditional sources of help and counsel, and now most families, even within the Church, lean heavily on the counsel of those whose world-view is confused at best, and sometimes positively harmful.
As a convert to the faith, I see that the distinctions are very sharply drawn. It is no small matter who we are listening to, because a small error in the beginning leads to large error in the end (De Ente et Essentia,"parvus error in principio magnus est in fine").
On the other hand, it is very difficult, expensive, and time-consuming to educate a therapist. I started St Barnabas to accelerate that process and to put faithful Catholic counsel at the service of all Catholic families, first, and at the service of all families whatsoever, eventually, and with God's grace.
